Do you use finger picks and if you do how many?

Right now I'm using the thumb, index and middle, but I'm thinking of adding
one more. I learned finger picking on guitar and I'm always tempted to use
the other finger and I do use it when I go w/o picks. I think I maybe I'm
developing a bad habit with the two styles.

I've seen Joe Wright play using 3 finger picks. There was a post about
this on the SGF and as I recall others also do. If you are used to
plucking a regular guitar, give it a try on the lap.

Thanks Ron:

I should but I'm trying to stop using my ring finger at all for now because
the instructional material suggest 3 pick. I'm sure I'll be back to this
subject before too long.

I was pretty sure someone did. I think seen some folk guitar players using 4
picks but I can't recall a lap steel player using 4.

I posted this days ago, but it has shown up in Google Groups, so here
is a reapeat:

"I only use a thumbpick on occasion, I've tried and failed to get on
with
fingerpicks. I use my ring finger when doing ordinary fingerpicking,
but I
haven't come across a situation where I need it on lap steel. I'm
guess that
if I did, I would learn to use it.

FWIW, if you are getting on OK with fingerpicks, I would stick with
them -
IMO it does no harm to have more than one string on your bow. I only
learned
to use a thumbpick because my nail developed a split that lasted about
10
years (no kidding), and now it is useful to be able to do both. If you
are
completely comfortable with fingerpicking, I don't think you will lose
that
skill when acquiring another one. Like riding a bike, you don't
forget."

Thanks Tony: (let's see if I can write)

I think I figured it out on my own. I'm eliminating my ring finger and
useing only picks. It's a pain in the ass but I'm getting used to it.

I'm realizing the more difficult the tunes get, the more important left hand
fingering becomes. Since all the material I have indicates 3 picks, I'll
just go with the flow.
