<g> I still read it though. You could make a nut, I've done it with black
tinted epoxy as used by boat builders for my tin Rick. I've also use
aluminium angle. Gun cases are about the right size for lap steels, it
should be easy to find one that is a good fit.

Thanks for the suggestions, Tony. The '40s Gibsons used a nut that
appears to be chromed steel, or solid nickel perhaps <g>.

I got an e-mail from a man who has a BR-4 (the BR-6 is the same body
shape, pickup, controls and bridge but just a black finish, white
plastic parts instead of gold, and no binding), he suggested the steel
guitar forum, I just have to go there and sign on some time very soon
<gg>.

Hoping to find an original nut, if not I will probably cut one from
brass stock. I have done the gun case routine before, with my Royaltone
and mini-Mosrite. Don`t have either of those any more. I miss my old
BR-4...

I looked up some pics of the BR-6. The nut is very simple, and should be
easy to make with flat stock. I would choose aluminium rather than brass
myself; it is easier to work and I know from experience that it has good
acoustic properties when used as lap steel nuts and bridges. OTOH, brass
would plate well with either nickel or chrome. My tin Rick (model 59) has a
fairly chunky bridge and saddle originally made of bakelite, epoxy seems to
be a good substitute, but I don't think it would be strong enough for your
application.

I found a real Gibson nut mounted on another steel of undetermined make;
it fits perfectly.
Next step: remove all rusted screws holding down control plate and
attempt to unfreeze potentiometers. Tuners have been removed and are
being prepared for cleaning.

Nice project, should be a lot of fun. I had to unfreeze the pole pieces in
two Supro lap steels to get the string-to-string balance the way I like it.
I ended up wrecking about half of them and making replacements, but now I
they are very fine functional vintage lap steels.
